How long does a landlord in Kentucky have to return your deposit?

Kentucky law doesn’t give landlords a number of days to return a deposit. Where its landlord-tenant act applies, they have to list any damage when you move out and tell you, at your last known address, how much you’re owed.

Questions

How long does a landlord have to return a security deposit in Kentucky?

Kentucky law doesn’t give landlords a number of days to return a deposit. Where its landlord-tenant act applies, they have to list any damage when you move out and tell you, at your last known address, how much you’re owed.

What if my landlord in Kentucky misses the deadline?

Ask for your deposit in writing, mention the law (KRS 383.580), and keep a copy. In many states a landlord who misses the deadline loses the right to keep any of it, and some owe a penalty on top. Kentucky’s law says what applies there; a local legal aid office can help if you’re stuck.

Do I need to give my landlord a forwarding address in Kentucky?

If you’re owed a refund, they have to tell you how much at your last known address. If you don’t reply within 60 days, they can keep it, so answer in writing.
