Questions

Texas landlords have 30 days after you move out to return your deposit, with an itemized list of anything they keep. They don’t have to until you give them a forwarding address in writing.

What if my landlord in Texas misses the deadline?

Ask for your deposit in writing, mention the law (Tex. Prop. Code §§ 92.103, 92.107), and keep a copy. In many states a landlord who misses the deadline loses the right to keep any of it, and some owe a penalty on top. Texas’s law says what applies there; a local legal aid office can help if you’re stuck.

Do I need to give my landlord a forwarding address in Texas?

Your landlord doesn’t have to return it until you give them a forwarding address in writing, so give one when you move out.
